Subject: 2005 SCCA Solo2 Nationals
Tis that time of year again. In September we took the mustang back to Topeka to run in the nationals once again. This year we would be running on Thursday and Friday so we left out of Atlanta on Monday, split the trip into two parts, and arrived in Topeka on Tuesday. Dropped the car off at the event site and got settled into the hotel. Wednesday was get the car ready and watch some of the action. As well as of course some shopping and bumming around Topeka. My brother Brian arrives from Minnesota to watch his little brother play.
First day of competition. Wet. We are running in the afternoon, South course and the weather is not cooperating. We decide that the street tires just won't do it, so it is my slick Avons for the day. By the time our group runs the rain has basically stopped, but the course is wet. My first run is made exciting by another car that has lost his way and I have to stop. I get a rerun. By my third and last run, the course is dryer but there are still puddles to be had. I am getting the hang of the wet running though we can't compete against cars with full rain tires.
Second day of competion. Dry, thank God. The North course has been modified since the original layout due to breaking up concrete. It took away some nice longer stretches and added one seriously tight corner. There is one long slalom that is difficult to get a good flow through, but all in all, I like the course. I run hard but eventually fall back a position or two. Overall, I still accomplished several goals. I was the first Ford in GStock (beat another Mustang and a Focus SVT). I beat another Atlanta Region member in his Mini Cooper S (who would have thought I was faster in the rain). Look for the results here - http://www.scca.org/_Filelibrary/File/2005SoloNationals-FINALresults.pdf
It was nice to have my brother there and of course it's always nice that my parents make the trip. Sitting at the banquet I began to get the idea to change classes. It is hard to run against all these little front wheel drive cars.....where can I go and run against similar cars (American Muscle cars). Hmmmmm, needs some investigation.
